All-Party Parliamentary Group on Patient Safety
About the group
The APPG is a cross-party group of MPs, chaired by Labour MP Howard Stoate, who share an interest in issues around patient safety. For parliamentarians our role is to ensure that there is a robust debate within Westminster on the issue and good awareness among politicians surrounding the work that is going on to maintain and strengthen patient safety.
Goals of the group
The APPG will seek to raise awareness of the broad range of issues that may affect patients, such as delays in treatment, drug and blood supply safety and medical errors. We need to understand why they happen and continue to take every effort to reduce them. In this respect the Group will complement the work of organisations such as the NPSA in moving the issue away from blame to finding good and effective solutions for the NHS.
Why patient safety?
Patient safety is rightly a top priority for the NHS and is of increasing concern to the general public. Each year 400,000 avoidable adverse incidents occur in patient care that directly lead to 40,000 deaths. This is costing the NHS £2 billion a year in extended hospital stays alone.
