About the APPG
All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups that are run by and for Members of Parliament, although many involve individuals and organisations from outside Parliament in their administration and activity.
The Patient Safety APPG was set up to specifically address patient safety in the NHS. The Group’s continuing work is underpinned by a core set of aims, to:
- examine issues concerning patient safety
- raise awareness of those issues among parliamentarians
- provide a forum for discussion and debate on key areas affecting patient safety
- generate recommendations for the Government to improve patient safety
The objectives of the Group are determined by patient safety issues in the NHS at the time and therefore are continually updated. The collective objectives for the Group are currently to:
- host quarterly APPG meetings that encourage a forum for topical debate
- ensure a broad selection of key stakeholders in patient safety are involved in Group meetings
- hold an Annual General Meeting every 12 months for its officers to be elected
- work with the Group’s secretariat; the Health Foundation, to ensure a broad range of topics are addressed when engaging with Westminster, Whitehall, NHS professionals, patient groups and NGOs
- use the Group’s meetings, where appropriate, to engage with relevant ministers and shadow health teams
